Abstract

This study is an attempt to clarify the wealth of material written on the subject of the servant, because so many adverse options have arisen. The recent findings of the Qumran Literature, or the Dead Sea Scrolls, has given opportunity to re-examine the interpretations of the servant passages. Very little material of significance is added to the study from the Qumran Literature, though the probable interpretation of the servant held by the Qumran community may be deducted from the literature. One result of these findings has been the greater confidence in the Hebrew Massoretic Text, now known to be the most exact of any Hebrew manuscripts. It is preferred over the Septuagent translation, in which certain emendations have been made effecting the meaning.
