Description

The Chorti-Mayan Indians of Guatemala interested me for several reasons. I had lived among them for a year and a half in a work program as a conscientious objector to war. During that time, I became more and more actively involved in the mission program of the California Yearly Meeting of Friends Church. Nearly all my extra time came to be taken up in youth meetings, camping programs and personal friendships.

While a student in the School of World Mission., Fuller Theological Seminary, my interest deepened. During my stay in Guatemala a great many people in one concentrated area accepted the gospel within a period of two or three weeks. My professors prompted me to ask why. What , social dynamics were operating? Was this a people movement where entire extended families accept the gospel at once? Could a study on my part determine the dynamics behind this movement and with their application see such movements spring up throughout these mountains? Actual study has since shown ·that this movement arose in special circumstances, but more importantly, that the dynamics of the people movement were operating and could be encouraged.
