Black velvet hat with ribbon ties, small. Has some black lace. Ties are somewhat tattered.

Belonged to Mary Jane Smith Cook (1831-1918), wife of Martin Cook who was a Friends minister in Oregon Yearly Meeting Grandparents of Genevieve Badley Cole, Jean Gardner Coffin, Betty Lou Gardner Hutchens, Doris Gardner Abrahamson, Elizabeth Hadley Hall. Mary Jane Cook wore the velvet hat in winter and the straw in summer -- wore these for many, many years. She was a faithful Quaker lady -- always at Sunday and mid week services. She used the plain language (thee, thou). She was the mother of Benjamin S. Cook, Joseph, John, Alva Cook and Lydia Gardner, Anna Miles, Florence Allen, Mary Kirk.
