Abstract
An ecclesial problem we Christians have today is that most of us do not any longer expect the Parousia, the second coming of Christ. Even as we recently heard and saw Air France Flight 447, with 228 people on board, vanish into the Atlanta ocean ‘‘by the roaring of the sea and waves’’ (Luke 21:25), we still do not care about the last day when we will stand all together before God, the final judge. Of course, it would be over-exaggerating to say there is a vivid connection between the crash of the plane and the last day (even while our deep prayers go to the vanished and their family members and friends). We Christians, however, need to ask why we have become too dumb and numb to the idea of Parousia, so much so that we do not expect it anymore. Why are we too focused on life on earth, even while seeing, everyday, here and there, signs of the last day?
