Abstract

Need Problem Opportunity (NPO) Statement

This project addresses the need for churches to provide spaces that foster mental health, belonging, and holistic well-being within a faith-based context.

Key Insights from Research

The research revealed that mental health is deeply tied to emotional, spiritual, and social well-being. The importance of creating opportunities for vulnerability, emotional expression, and community connection emerged as central themes. Artistic expression, shared meals, and physical movement proved particularly effective in fostering belonging and emotional healing. Additionally, theological perspectives underscored the church’s role as a place for love, care, and community, rather than clinical intervention.

Ministry Context

The project originated at First Presbyterian Church Bend, OR, and transitioned to Sunriver Christian Fellowship, a smaller congregation of 150, composed almost entirely of retirees aged 55+. This change in context influenced the project’s design, emphasizing adaptations for a congregation with different needs, resources, and preferences.

Project Description

The project, Seasons of Wholeness: Cultivating Community for Mind, Body, and Spirit, is a yearlong curriculum designed for churches to support mental health and deepen spirituality through holistic practices. Divided into four seasonal modules, the program includes:

  • Guided art gatherings that encourage emotional expression and community connection.
  • Intergenerational community art installations fostering belonging.
  • Movement-based activities to connect participants with their bodies and nature.
  • Shared meals to deepen relationships and build community.

Each module incorporates scripture reflection and practical tips for facilitators, making it accessible for churches with limited resources. By promoting creativity, connection, and care, the project equips churches to bridge the gap between faith and mental health while empowering participants to carry these practices into their daily lives
