Abstract

This chapter will seek to examine language in its many permutations, including its inculcation from sociocultural, religious and historical forces, and its emergence within a developmental context that includes interiorization into private speech. The limitations of language for simulating the mind of the Other, the distance between minds, and the constant dynamism of words will be evaluated in light of the theme of the value of recognizing subjectivity and acknowledging layers of meaning in the quest for truth and legitimacy. Metaphors of the body are used to represent ecological and systemic forces in language, also emphasizing the potency of mind-word-body interactions for immune functions. Reconciliation with the Other will be reviewed within the context of transcendent self-examination and dawning consciousness. Ultimately the power of the word, and the quest for confessional atonement, are prospected here.
