Abstract

This study explores a unified framework for integrating mental health counseling with spiritual guidance within the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church pastoral theology, emphasizing the essential role of clergy in promoting both spiritual and mental well-being. The initiative aims to establish a structured approach that aligns mental health strategies with theological principles, thereby enhancing the connection between mental wellness and spiritual vitality.

Current observations indicate that many clergy members lack adequate training in pastoral counseling, which significantly impedes their ability to effectively address the mental and social issues faced by their communities. This research seeks to empower church leaders by providing comprehensive training and resources essential for delivering holistic care that encompasses the body, mind, and spirit of individuals in need.

The study underscores the importance of equipping clergy with counseling methodologies grounded in Christian faith, thereby enabling them to better support individuals in distress and enhance their pastoral effectiveness. Additionally, the initiative recognizes the complexity of mental health issues and the necessity of creating a safe and understanding environment in which congregants feel comfortable seeking help.

Through rigorous examination and collaborative efforts, this project aspires to fulfill the Church's mission of holistic ministry, enriching the lives of congregants while positively impacting the broader community. The findings are organized into six comprehensive sections, each addressing various facets of integrating mental health counseling into pastoral care. This approach results in practical applications that embody the essence of spiritual professionalism in modern pastoral care, ensuring that clergy are well-prepared to meet the diverse needs of their communities and promote a holistic approach to ministry that reflects the Church's commitment to both spiritual and emotional well-being.
