Abstract

Churches within the seventy-eight districts of the USA/Canada Region of the Church of the Nazarene do not have consistently effective evangelistic preaching. Evangelistic preaching is central to the denomination's historical identity, rooted in the holiness tradition of gospel proclamation that invites response. Educational pathways for ordination provide limited exposure to evangelistic preaching, relying instead on local-level practice, and opportunities are frequently limited. Consequently, many developing preachers enter ministry with passion but little experience in evangelistic proclamation.

Research conducted in response to the NPO highlighted several insights. First, growth in preaching requires repeated practice, not simply exposure to content. Second, practice alone is insufficient without clear expectations and meaningful feedback. Third, learning environments that combine self-assessment, peer feedback, and instructor feedback, all oriented toward shared expectations, have a greater formative impact than any single approach. These findings underscore the importance of creating a learning system that develops both preaching skills and normalizes feedback outside the academic setting.

This project emerged from my ministry context as a denominational district and regional leader where I regularly interact with district superintendents, pastors, and ministry students who have provided a broad view of preaching formation across diverse congregational and educational settings. This vantage point, along with the input of these leaders during the research process, made the formation gap in evangelistic preaching both visible and urgent.

Evangelistic Preaching Essentials is a peer-based learning system designed to address this gap for developing preachers through intentional practice and structured feedback. The project includes video teaching sessions, Facilitator’s Guide, Participant Notebook, and tools for sermon development and evaluation. Participants practice preaching, guided reflection, and peer feedback aligned with shared standards introduced through the teaching content. Designed for district-level implementation, the project offers a practical, scalable approach to forming evangelistic preachers across the USA/Canada Region
