Abstract
This project addresses the NPO Statement: “The practical theology of mainline congregations in decline is no longer speaking at all.” Research conducted across congregational contexts revealed that many communities of faith still believe deeply, but have lost the confidence and practice of articulating their faith story aloud. Decline is not only a matter of resources and worship size, but also of a congregation’s ability to name who they are, what God is doing among them, and why their story matters now.
The project emerges directly from my vocational context as a pastor and judicatory leader accompanying 130 worshipping communities across diverse settings, particularly those navigating pastoral transitions, financial limitation, or the absence of available clergy. The primary end users of this project are these congregational leaders and laypeople who seek to rebuild their capacity to speak their story of faith to others. These congregations are large and small, rural and urban, thriving and struggling; what unites them is a diminished storytelling capacity paired with openness to learning how to speak again. Research confirmed that practical, embodied practices can restore this capacity.
New, New Song is a storytelling card game designed to help congregations begin speaking again. The game builds on the lived experience of participants and assumes basic familiarity with biblical stories and theological concepts. Playable in under 30 minutes, it fits easily into standard meetings. Through prompts rooted in scripture, shared human experience, and best practices of storytelling, participants practice naming true, personal stories of faith aloud. Initially used with leadership boards, call committees, and small groups, the project will expand for broader gatherings, strengthening congregational vitality, purpose, and hope by helping people share the old, old story in new contexts
