Abstract
This training evaluation study assessed the effectiveness of an oral Bible storying training on evangelism, discipleship, and the overall efficacy of a 5-day oral Bible storying training program conducted for 40 indigenous church planter leaders (CPLs) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Using Kirkpatrick’s evaluation framework, the study assessed training effectiveness across all four evaluation levels: reaction, learning, behavior, and results. Through an observational learning assessment, a feedback session, and interviews conducted 6–8 weeks and 6 months after the training, the study documented the CPLs’ implementation of the method in their Christian ministries across Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Uganda. The findings revealed overwhelmingly positive reactions regarding the value and relevance of the training, the successful acquisition of the three core components of the oral Bible storying method, significant behavioral changes in evangelism and discipleship approaches, and meaningful community impact. These findings indicate oral Bible storying enhanced evangelistic efficacy and improved discipleship outcomes among oral learners in these East African communities by providing culturally relevant and contextually appropriate communication methods that align with oral learners’ preferences. The study was conducted for East African church planters who live and work in Ethiopia, Uganda, and South Sudan, with findings that may require adaptation when applied to different cultural contexts. The findings of the study suggest it has the potential to extend beyond the organization and work effectively for the broader global missions movement.
