Abstract
This research examines the paradoxical relationship between the destruction of religious buildings in Ukraine during the Russian invasion and the effectiveness of Russian propaganda narratives. Using a mixed-methods approach combining statistical data, sociological surveys, and document analysis, we investigate how the systematic targeting of Ukrainian religious sites by Russian forces has produced effects contrary to those likely intended. The research reveals that instead of undermining Ukrainian national identity, the destruction of churches and other religious buildings has catalyzed profound transformations in Ukraine's religious landscape, accelerated the transition of parishes from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, and significantly reduced the effectiveness of Russian propaganda narratives centered around concepts of the "Russian world" and "shared Orthodox heritage." The findings demonstrate that religious identity can serve as a powerful factor for national mobilization and resistance under existential threat, contributing to the strengthening of national unity and the formation of robust immunity to foreign propaganda.
Це дослідження розглядає парадоксальний зв'язок між руйнуванням релігійних споруд в Україні під час російського вторгнення та ефективністю російських пропагандистських наративів. Використовуючи змішаний метод, що поєднує статистичні дані, соціологічні опитування та аналіз документів, ми досліджуємо, як систематичні атаки російських військ на українські релігійні місця призвели до наслідків, протилежних тим, які, ймовірно, були заплановані. Дослідження показує, що замість підриву української національної ідентичності, руйнування церков та інших релігійних споруд каталізувало глибокі трансформації в релігійному ландшафті України, прискорило перехід парафій від Української православної церкви (Московського патріархату) до Православної церкви України та значно знизило ефективність російських пропагандистських наративів, зосереджених навколо концепцій «російського світу» та «спільної православної спадщини». Результати дослідження демонструють, що релігійна ідентичність може служити потужним фактором національної мобілізації та опору в умовах екзистенційної загрози, сприяючи зміцненню національної єдності та формуванню стійкого імунітету до іноземної пропаганди.
