Abstract
As we embark on this book's quest to understand this cultural moment and possible Christian responses to it, we will begin in this chapter by considering several anchor points to which western civilization previously tied itself. For the most part, these old moorings provided an agreed-upon worldview that brought security and meaning to society. Over time, as people's perspectives changed, our culture slipped away from its previous sources of confidence or even certainty. Before we begin to explore our current, unmoored, cultural moment, we need to survey, at least briefly, what these old moorings were and why they have faded from use.
