Abstract

Historical trauma and context are necessary to comprehend and properly assess present-day issues faced by American Indian/Alaska Native communities. Historically, psychology research has not included minoritized and marginalized populations. A literature review pinpointed early assessment and intervention as critical for adolescents Although psychologists are increasingly aware of the importance of utilizing culturally-informed constructs, there is a lag in the update of assessment instruments. The BASC-3 is complex multidimensional assessment tool with potential to identify early-life issues for targeted intervention. Research on the reliability and validity of the BASC-3 is limited and sparse (Yetter & Foutch, 2017; Higa 2022), noting particular concerns with certain scales. AI/AN participants are significantly under-represented in the assessment norm sample, indirectly included through the Other category (12.4%) of the BASC-3 SRP-A norm group sample. The present study focuses on extending and complementing Higa’s (2022) work analyzing the BASC-3 SRP-A Clinical and Adaptive Scales. Participant data from 73 AI/AN and 66 White high school students was drawn from a special education, clinical sample archival records. Both groups were compared with a BASC-3 manualized clinical normative. Internal consistency coefficients, and raw data means were compared. Results showed coefficients differences between the norm & AI/AN groups, along with norm & White group differences. Interestingly, the AI/AN & White groups showed no differences. Results further agree with previous research, emphasizing cultural differences present in scale score interpretations such as Ego Strength (Content Scales), and Self-Esteem, and Self-Reliance (Adaptive Scales; Higa, 2022).
