Abstract

The purpose of Binding Things Together: Teaching as a Religious Activity, as Ronald Noone states in the introduction, is “to argue that religion and education remain indispensable vehicles for living authentic, rewarding, and valuable lives so long as they are not confined by the institutions that seek to claim ownership of them” (p. xiv). He claims that education should not be considered confined to schools, nor religion to churches as institutions. Much of the narrative supporting this assertion flows from his connections to educators Neil Postman and Gabriel Moran, both of whom have been his teachers. As his mentors, they and their thinking are prominent in this work. The Reverend Dr. Noone has been retired since 2012 from teaching and administrative roles in both K-12 and universities. Although the book is based primarily on Noone’s experiences in K-12 education, it is highly relevant to issues confronting postsecondary education as well.
